Abstract

The article offers a conceptualisation of art-based research as a methodological trend in qualitative and mixed research. It is shown that art-based research, like any research, builds on procedure. It implies precise adherence to the developed and accepted rules and norms of conducting scientific research, which set a special rhythm and principles of registration of what is happening, including deviations from originally intended ideas, actions and distinctions. Registration of occurring events literally forms the epistemic thing, sets the contours and boundaries of understanding, creates methodological vulnerability of knowledge, accessibility and visibility for critique. Art-based research is a procedural approach to creating a form open not only to reception and development, but also to criticism and falsification (according to Popper). The distinction between artistic research and art-based research is presented and substantiated separately as a fundamental difference in subject
relations. Artistic research represents an inquiry of an artist to science, whereas art-based research poses an inquiry of the researcher to art.
