Shaninka — Pedagogy of Relationships
Keywords:
pedagogy of relationships, alternative education, Ivan Illich, Theodor Shanin, institutional sustainability, educational autonomyAbstract
The text presents the results of a roundtable discussion involving graduates and students from different generations of the sociology faculty at the Moscow School of Social and Economic Sciences (MSSES, «Shaninka»). The aim of the discussion was «methodological pedagogical reflection» on the phenomenon of institutional sustainability of a small educational institution and identification of the specifics of its pedagogical approach.
The conceptual framework for the analysis was based on the polemic between the school’s founder T. Shanin and I. Illich regarding the institutional form of education. Through a system of metaphors («forest-ecosystem», «living laboratory», «terrarium of friends», «courage vaccination», and others), the roundtable participants reveal the essence of Shaninka as a special educational space.
During the roundtable, participants identified key characteristics of Shaninka’s «pedagogy of relationships»: autonomy as the foundation of institutional sustainability; disagreement as a principle of cognition; partnership relations between teachers and students; freedom through responsibility; personalization and adaptiveness of the educational process; «pedagogy of the present moment».
