Abstract: This study examines the phenomenon of illegal archaeological activity (archeological looting) as a socio-criminal practice that causes irreparable damage to the archaeological heritage. The relevance of this paper is substantiated by the catastrophic scale of the destruction of cultural heritage sites leading to the irreversible loss of historical information. The research constructs the socio-demographic and criminological profile of individuals committing such crimes. It also presents a typology of archeological looters designed by synthesizing the contemporary scholarly approaches. By integrating legal and motivational, criminological and organizational, and socio-psychological perspectives, the study identifies four stable personality types: profit-oriented, romantic, collecting and knowledge-driven, each inflicting significant harm on the archaeological context. The article also explores the mechanisms of self-justification used by offenders to neutralize cognitive dissonance. Particular attention is paid to institutional challenges in countering this activity, including the key role of the Internet in consolidating archeological looters communities, enabling information exchange, and legitimizing their practices. Using the Republic of Bashkortostan as a case study, the article highlights the alarming dynamics of the phenomenon’s growth: over the past decade, instances of looting of archaeological sites have increased nearly ninefold. The conclusion emphasizes that the evolution of scholarly approaches has gradually shifted from merely documenting damage to conducting in-depth criminological and socio-psychological analyses of offenders’ personalities, which is an essential prerequisite for developing effective countermeasures.
